Tina Walker and her family moved from Virginia to Charlotte in 2006. She was very active in my hometown community. She was trying to figure out how she could fit in here. She knew that she wanted to do something that could help people and make some sort of difference in their lives.
She had two children commuting to college and various destinations throughout Charlotte. They would come home and tell her about the number of homeless people that they would see every day laying on park benches and grassy hillsides. She is legally blind and was unable to see this for herself. However, this really struck a chord with her children as well as herself. In Virginia, she used to work in a homeless & domestic violence shelter. She served on the Board of Directors and was a part of having a domestic violence shelter built. Her educational background and degree are in social work.
She educated herself on what it took to start a nonprofit. She decided after doing research and calling numerous shelters throughout the country she wanted to work with homeless people. She spoke with shelter management about their programs & services. She then put together a team of passionate enthusiastic people that wanted to try and combat the homelessness crisis in Charlotte.
One of our former/deceased board members, Spinner, came up with our organization’s name, The Walker House for New Beginnings Inc.
Since we didn’t have a physical shelter, we met our unhoused neighbors where they hung out at Tent City or The Wall.
We took our community outreach program to our unhoused neighbors. We can provide meals, clothing, toiletries and more.
